The TearRestore Thermal Mask increased tear break-up time, reduced dry eye symptoms and increased meibomian gland function in patients with dry eye disease, according to topline study results reported in a company press release.
An independent study conducted by the University of Colorado included data on 22 eyes of patients aged 18 to 89 years with meibomian gland dysfunction. Researchers assessed participants before a single 10-minute session of wearing the TearRestore Mask and again after the session. Participants also used the mask at home for 10 minutes daily for 28 to 60 days and recorded use in a diary.
According to the release, use of the mask resulted in a 90% increase in tear break-up time, a 51% reduction in dry eye symptoms and a 40% increase in functional meibomian glands.
“We are thrilled with the results of the University of Colorado study,” Ken DauSchmidt, MSc, TearRestore co-founder and CEO, said in the release. “They further confirm that the TearRestore Mask offers patients an unparalleled experience by providing sustained heat and the ability to see throughout the treatment, which will improve efficacy and compliance. No other thermal mask can provide this level of effectiveness.”
He continued: “By showing that the mask is effective in altering meibomian gland secretions at a single visit, the study proves that this novel treatment could potentially offer the millions of patients suffering from MGD a more convenient and effective way to treat the condition.”
