Jason S. Ng, OD, PhD, FAAO, spoke about key takeaways from his presentation at Academy on cannabis use and its effect on vision in a video interview with Healio.

“There’s a lot to talk about cannabis in general ... and there’s a lot to talk about in vision and systemic health, both acute and chronic effects,” Ng, associate professor at Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University, said.

In his presentation, Ng focused on acute effects of cannabis, including its well-known effect on IOP and conjunctival hyperemia.

Ng said that although there are “really no differences in our standard visual acuity test, [there are] possible differences in specific types of pupil measurements and eye movement, in terms of near point of convergence, that I think a lot of people weren’t aware of.”

He also spoke about dose-dependent effects of recreational vs. medical cannabis use, audience discussion surrounding frequency of patient use, and the need for more research on CBD and its effect on IOP.
