SAN DIEGO — The CureSight home treatment technology for amblyopia produced results better than patching in a randomized controlled study, NovaSight CEO Ran Yam said at a virtual press conference held during Academy 2022.

“Amblyopia is a leading cause of vision loss in children,” Yam said during the academy-sponsored event. “The gold standard was patching, but we all know compliance is a problem.”

NovaSight’s CureSight system, which recently received FDA clearance, is an eye tracking-based digital treatment for amblyopia that trains the visual system to use both eyes simultaneously over the course of 4 to 6 months, Yam said.

“The child is watching their favorite content with Netflix, Zoom, Amazon Prime, Facebook or YouTube [through red-blue treatment glasses],” he said. “We do color conversion in real time and then blur the center of vision in real time around momentary gaze position. Samples are taken 90 times per second.”
According to a company press release, a multicenter study randomized 103 participants between 4 and 9 years old to receive CureSight digital treatment or eye patching.

“Treatment results were better than the patch,” Yam said. “[There was improvement of] two lines in 80% of all subjects compared to 60% in the patching group.”

In addition, mean adherence at week 16 was 93%, and 95% of parents said they were likely or very likely to choose the CureSight treatment over patching, according to the release. A significant stereo acuity improvement was observed in both groups, and no serious adverse events were reported.

Yam explained that the system is demonstrated to the patient at the clinic, and the at-home platform is prescribed and shipped to the patient.

“Then everything is taken care of by the monitoring center, and the doctor gets a monthly compliance and treatment progression report from the cloud,” he said. “Three CPT codes are approved.”
