LAS VEGAS – Optometrists should be aware of the current concern for overprescribing of opiates, Marc D. Myers, OD, FAAO, Coatesville VA Medical Center, said at Vision Expo West.

“It’s not that optometrists have a history of overprescribing opiates, but there is a concern now with the opioid crisis in our country,” Myers said.

“We have many options to treat ocular pain – acute, chronic and postsurgical pain – that are ophthalmic options,” he said. “We reserve the use of opiates for patients who do not respond well to over-the-counter or ophthalmic options.”
