LAS VEGAS – Taking a functional history and understanding your patient’s goals are the first steps in integrating low vision into your practice, according to Alexis Malkin, OD, FAAO, of New England College of Optometry.

Malkin told Healio at Vision Expo West: “Once you have that basis you can begin to identify which strategies will be most helpful to your patients. Sometimes that is traditional spectacles, other times it’s hand or stand magnifiers or the integration of apps and assistive technology.”

Occupational therapists and orientation and mobility specialists may also be involved in the care.
