LAS VEGAS – A variety of glaucoma and cataract technologies in the pipeline now will help optometric patients in the future, Justin A. Schweitzer, OD, FAAO, of Vance Thompson Vision Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., said at Vision Expo West.

A number of glaucoma drug delivery devices are being investigated, he said, with bimatoprost SR (Allergan) currently on the market. Intracanalicular inserts are in the pipeline along with a travoprost implant (Ocular Therapeutix) and drug-eluting contact lenses that may help reduce the medication burden for patients.

Multiple accommodative IOLs are also being developed, using fluid or silicone to change the radius of curvature of the lens to provide accommodative amplitude.
