LAS VEGAS – Optometrists are now able to provide Nd:YAG capsulotomy, laser floater removal, laser peripheral iridotomy and injections with expanded scope of practice in certain states, Nate Lighthizer, OD, FAAO, said at Vision Expo West.

“YAG capsulotomy is the No. 1 laser [procedure] optometrists are doing,” Lighthizer said, but laser floater removal is also gaining popularity.

“Our traditional treatment options for floaters were observation or a floater-only vitrectomy, which is on the extreme end of going in for surgery,” he said. “Laser floater removal has offered us a nice option in between.”

Selective laser trabeculoplasty, another procedure now being performed by some optometrists, “has been proven to be a great first-line option for glaucoma,” Lighthizer said. “It’s a huge public health win for optometrists who are on the front lines of diagnosing glaucoma.”
