NEW ORLEANS – CooperVision announced that its MyDay daily disposable contact lenses have joined Clariti 1 day family as net plastic neutral products.

Through this initiative, the equivalent of more than 28 million plastic bottles has been prevented from reaching the world’s oceans, CooperVision stated in a press release distributed here at SECO 2022.

For every box of Clariti 1 day or MyDay contact lenses distributed in the U.S., CooperVision funds the collection, processing and reuse of general plastic waste equivalent to the weight of the plastic contained in the lenses and packaging.

The company partners with Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities and reprocesses the materials for reintroduction into the global supply chain.

People living in coastal communities who collect plastic can trade it in for credits for food and other supplies, Michele Andrews, OD, CooperVision vice president, professional and government affairs, Americas, told Healio.

“Doctors can offer something to their patients who don’t want daily disposable lenses due to the plastic waste,” she said.

Andrews also told Healio that CooperVision launched a new wearer support toolkit.

“Clariti is ideally positioned for new wearers,” she said. “This silicone hydrogel has a full range of parameters at a price point for new wearers. It’s a great option for those who don’t want the cost of a premium daily disposable.”

The toolkit includes a website for new wearers with videos on insertion and removal, information on using make-up or eyedrops with contact lenses, and traveling with contacts. In-office training tools are also available, with QR codes that link to the consumer tips website.
