Portable VR headset provides visual field testing
BOSTON – M&S Technologies introduced the Smart System VR Headset here at a press conference during the American Academy of Optometry meeting.
The virtual reality headset can be used for full threshold visual field testing in under 3 minutes, including 10-2, 24-2 and 30-2, as well as a 45-second-per-eye QuickScreen, Mike Umali, of M&S Technologies, said at the academy-sponsored event.
“At the end of each test, a [Humphrey Field Analyzer]-style report will be printed out or can be exported into your electronic health record,” he said. “In addition to the visual field test you have contour stereo testing.”
Umali said one of the key features of this technology is its active eye tracking.
“If you move your eyes, the test will stop. Once fixation is back on target, the test will commence,” he said.
Another important point is that the test can be conducted in a fully illuminated room, Umali said.
“It is lightweight, portable, straightforward and easy to use,” he said. “You can test with both eyes open; there’s no need to patch an eye. No internet is required during the test. You can take it to any room or building. Patients say it’s a more comfortable test-taking experience.”
Progression analysis is also built into the system, Umali said.
