Eschenbach launches customizable handheld video magnifier

BOSTON – Eschenbach Optik of America introduced the Smartlux Digital, designed to help patients with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy with daily living tasks, here at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting.

Tim Gels, Eschenbach’s director of marketing, said at an academy-sponsored press conference that the device is a handheld video magnifier that features a simple user interface with four tactile and color-coded buttons, a 5-inch glare-free LCD screen and a 50-frames-per-second refresh rate.

“Doctors can customize this for the patient,” Gels said. “You can adjust the LED screen brightness. It has a built-in stand with three positions that allows patients to use for reading, writing and other tasks.”

Fourteen color contrast options are available, according to the company’s website.

Images are captured with a high-resolution camera, Gels said, and the user can store thousands of pictures that can be transferred to a computer with a USB cord. It can also be connected to an external TV.

The unit shuts off automatically, has a 3-hour run time and has a USB-C connection for recharging.

“There’s no wrong way to insert the cable,” Gels said.

An optional handle is available to provide optimal stability and a supportive grip, the company said on its website, and an eyelet at the bottom of the magnifier allows for a lanyard to be attached so it can be worn around the neck.

Eschenbach sells directly to eye care professionals, Gels said, providing them with, “a simple, yet full-featured and customizable solution.”
