BOSTON – The optimal corneal thickness in eyes undergoing corneal cross-linking is customarily 400 microns, according to Daniel Fuller, OD, FAAO(Dipl), FSLS.

However, his study being presented here at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting showed that thinner corneas swelled an average of 76 microns after administration of hypotonic riboflavin, reaching or exceeding the recommended thickness in 15 minutes. His small pilot study involved only 31 eyes, so more studies are needed, he said.
