ORLANDO – Eye care providers are fitting more patients with astigmatism and presbyopia in contact lenses, according to data from GfK Market Intelligence.

CooperVision executives believe their Biofinity toric multifocal, launched in February 2020, has greatly contributed to this growth.

According to GfK, 50% of patients fit in this lens have been new or lapsed contact lens wearers, CooperVision said in a press release.

“The data show Biofinity toric multifocal contact lenses are bringing wearers into the category,” Michele Andrews, OD, vice president of professional and government affairs, Americas, CooperVision, told Primary Care Optometry News/Healio here at Vision Expo East.

Clinicians are experiencing a 93% success rate when using the fitting guide, Andrews said.

“This is driving ECP confidence ... they have confidence in the performance of the lens,” she said.

The Biofinity toric multifocal provides an option for ECPs to transition their existing toric contact lens patients as they become presbyopic, the company said in the release.

“In fact, the GfK data shows that of the Biofinity toric multifocal wearers who are refit from a different lens, the majority come from torics,” according to the release.

The GfK data showed that the multifocal contact lens segment in the U.S. grew by 4% in Q4 2020 vs. the previous year, the company said in the release.

The company also announced here at Vision Expo East that the parameters for Biofinity XR were expanded in May.

“There’s not an eye that can’t be fit with this lens,” Andrews said.

CooperVision stated in a separate press release that the lens is now available in 33,000 prescriptions.
