The World Council of Optometry announced that it will continue its relationship with WHO into 2023, with an objective to “promote policies and strategies derived from the decisions of governing bodies” of WHO.

World Council of Optometry (WCO) President Paul Folkesson wrote in the announcement that the official relations include a “collaborative agreement to support WHO’s work, the possibility of participating in WHO governing body meetings and the possibility of organizing side events during the World Health Assembly.”

The 2021-2023 collaboration plan will advance priority areas including supporting the development of universal health coverage, raising awareness for myopia and preventive measures, and ensuring comprehensive eye care and optometric services in national universal health coverage plans.

“WCO looks forward to continuing work in collaboration with WHO towards their mission to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable,” Folkesson wrote. “WCO’s official relations with WHO ensures a strong voice for global optometry.”
