Bausch + Lomb’s Alaway, an over-the-counter eye drop, is set to launch in the U.S., the company announced in a press release.

The preservative-free antihistamine drop is FDA-approved for the relief of itching, according to the company.

“With the availability of Alaway [ketotifen fumarate ophthalmic solution 0.035%] preservative-free antihistamine eye drops, consumers now have a new OTC option that provides fast, lasting eye itch relief without the use of preservatives,” Bausch + Lomb U.S. President Joe Gordon said in the release.

Alaway drops feature a prescription-strength formula, formulated to block the release of histamines and reduce eye itch relief symptoms at the source, the company said in the release. Within minutes of instillation, the drop provides relief that lasts up to 12 hours with one dose.

“With the preservative-free Alaway formula, patients who have allergies now have a new option with less risk of irritation associated with preservatives to help relieve their eye itch symptoms,” Arthur Epstein, OD, director of clinical research at Phoenix Eye Care, said in the release..
