Bausch + Lomb introduced Infuse silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lenses.

Using ProBalance Technology to aid in ocular homeostasis and reduce symptoms of contact lens dryness, the silicone hydrogel (SiHy) lenses maintain 96% of its moisture for a full 16 hours, the company said in a press release.

“There have been a lot of attempts over the years to modify contact lens materials to improve moisture retention and make them softer,” Arthur B. Epstein, OD, FAAO, head of the Dry Eye – Ocular Surface Disease Center and director of clinical research at Phoenix Eye Care – the Dry Eye Center of Arizona in Phoenix, told Primary Care Optometry News. “This is a major breakthrough in contact lenses that has been engineered specifically from the ocular surface up.”

Epstein said that because contact lenses need to interface between the inner and outer layers of a thin tear film, they have to maintain hydrophilicity but also require many of the same characteristics and qualities as the tear film.

“Our understanding of the tear film has advanced tremendously over the last decade, and the new Infuse lenses apply this work in the dry eye space,” he said.

Epstein noted that the material is particularly biocompatible, with a high rate of moisture retention.

“It has been almost surprising how well patients have responded, being used to taking out a stiff disc, whereas the Infuse disc feels nearly as wet as when they first put them in at the beginning of the day,” he said.

“Our Bausch + Lomb Infuse SiHy daily disposable lens combines innovative design and advanced technology to provide support for dryness as a barrier to contact lens wear,” Joe Gordon, U.S. president of Bausch + Lomb, said in the release. “Bausch + Lomb Infuse is designed with an advanced silicone hydrogel daily disposable lens to help reduce symptoms of contact lens dryness and is a testament to our ongoing commitment to apply the latest science to meet the needs of patients and eye care providers.”
