NovaBay Pharmaceutical announced that results from third-party laboratory testing of Avenova showed that it kills SARS-CoV-2.

The company said in a press release that it will submit these results to the EPA to be considered for its approved list of disinfectants for use against the virus.

Avenova (0.01% hypochlorous acid), a lid and lash spray designed to remove bacteria and debris around the eyes, was tested for its effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 on hard surfaces, according to the release. Investigators performed testing with the USA-WA1/2020 strain of SARS-CoV-2 at room temperature in a 5% serum of inoculum on a glass Petri dish.

The solution was sprayed on the surface from 6 to 8 inches until it was thoroughly wet. After 60 seconds, the virus was inactivated, the company said in the release.

“Since Avenova’s inception, we have known it to be a powerful antimicrobial spray solution, effective against all types of pathogens, including a wide variety of viruses, bacteria and fungi,” NovaBay president and CEO Justin Hall, said in the release. “Now we have results from a highly reputable independent laboratory confirming Avenova kills the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.”
