The American Optometric Association is calling upon U.S. companies to join its 2020 Employer Pledge program by supporting annual comprehensive eye exams for their employees.
More than 30 employers have already joined the program, which is part of the AOA’s #2020 EyeExam initiative, the group said in a press release. With the employers’ support, this message will reach more than 300,000 workers.
Endorsement of this program affirms an employer’s conviction of the importance of caring for the overall health and wellbeing of employees and their families by reminding them of the importance of an annual comprehensive eye exam, the AOA said.
AOA President Barbara L. Horn, OD, told Primary Care Optometry News: “#2020EyeExam represents a historic opportunity for AOA, member doctors, students and affiliates to engage, educate and inform America about eye health and shape what we will ensure is recognized as the Year of the Eye Exam. We have taken the time to ensure that we bring to life an initiative that we can use to not just mark the onceever moment of 2020, but really create a movement into the future
“The AOA’s simple yet compelling message,” she added, “will be delivered continuously and relentlessly to the public, the news media, policymakers and the nation’s leading employers: Make 2020 the year to get an in-person, comprehensive eye examination with an AOA family doctor of optometry.”
The AOA noted in the press release that its American Eye-Q survey revealed that only 53% of respondents said they visit an eye health professional at least once a year, and one-third lacked an understanding of how to take care of their eyes and vision. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
