LAS VEGAS – The Cognivue System can be used in the optometrist’s office to establish baseline cognition for a patient and then detect declines in performance with follow-up testing before symptoms appear.

Cognivue launched this new technology, which was FDA-approved 3 years ago, into the optometry market here at Vision Expo West.

Patients take a 5- to 6-minute in-office test that uses adaptive psychophysics to identify changes in cognitive function that may indicate an impairment that could be managed, Cognivue’s Melek Cav, told Primary Care Optometry News. Based on the test results, modifiable risk factors could be addressed that may possibly slow or reverse the cognitive decline, she said.

The CogniSystem software algorithm calibrates each patient’s motor and visual abilities during the test and continuously adapts to the individual performance, providing a customized test.

“The better you do, the tougher it gets,” Cav said.

The Cognivue Report, produced immediately after the test is concluded, shows the overall cognitive score and provides a breakdown into key cognitive domains, according to company literature. These domains include visuospatial, memory, executive function, reaction time and speed processing.

“Cognivue can objectively, quantitatively and reliably measure a patient’s cognition,” Cav said.

“Cognitive issues are not just Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,” she said. Many patients may fall into the low-moderate range, where lifestyle issues; cardiovascular and metabolic conditions; sleep disorders; neurological, focal and chronic issues; hormonal changes; and postsurgical or post-chemo can come into play.

After testing, the patient is provided with a CogniWell Program that explains cognition, the underlying disease that may affect cognitive function and suggested lifestyle habits that empower the patient to achieve optimal cognitive health. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
