NEW ORLEANS – TearCare, Sight Science’s new technology for applying heat to the eyelids, will be launched in May, a company spokesperson told Primary Care Optometry News here at SECO.

Matt Gibson, Sight Sciences’ product director for dry eye, said the software-controlled device is FDA-listed for the application of heat to the eyelids in patients with conditions for which warm compresses are typically recommended, such as meibomian gland dysfunction, dry eye or blepharitis.

The SmartLid technology facilitates natural meibum expression when it is in the melted phase, the company said in a press release.

Patients wear the disposable SmartLids for 15 minutes, and a doctor or technician controls the heat level via software in the reusable SmartHub device, Gibson explained. Patients can have their eyes open and closed and blink during the heating process.

Afterwards, the doctor expresses the meibomian glands in all four lids using a single-use clearance assistant tool. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
