SAN ANTONIO – Virtual Field launched its virtual reality platform for visual field testing during a press conference here at the American Academy of Optometry meeting.

The Virtual Field system, which consists of a virtual reality headset, computer and clicker, runs standard 24-2 and suprathreshold visual field tests, the company said in a press release. It is also developing 10-2, 30-2, kinetic and frequency doubling tests for the headset.

“Conventional devices use an eye patch for occlusion,” Virtual Field CEO Aaron Smith said at the press conference. “Some studies show the patch can actually affect visual field test results. With Virtual Field, you don’t need to wear an eye patch. We control what image is shown in each eye.”

The instrument tests both eyes simultaneously and features fixation and sleep monitoring to reduce invalid test results, according to the release.

The company said in the press release that its device is ideal for optometrists who want to provide visual field testing but do not have the time or money for a conventional device.
