MacuLogix releases guide for diagnosing, managing AMD

SAN ANTONIO – MacuLogix introduced here at the American Academy of Optometry meeting a practical guide to help clinicians apply the standard of care guidelines for age-related macular degeneration that the company introduced a year ago.

Amanda Lee, OD, MacuLogix director of professional relations, explained here at an AAO-sponsored press conference that a panel of practitioners collaborated on Practical Perspectives on the Diagnosis and Management of AMD.

She said the experts explain: How to use AMD as an easy point of entry to medical optometry, historical perspectives and similarities between glaucoma and AMD, how to apply dark adaptation in patients with and without AMD, how to create an AMD center of excellence, the positive financial implications and patient engagement.

According to the ALSTAR study (Owsley et al.), “impaired dark adaptation identifies subclinical AMD at least 3 years before clinical imaging with OCT,” Lee said, and “AdaptDx is the only functional test for AMD.”

She continued: “We have poor outcomes with AMD currently. Over 78% of patients present with 20/50 vision or worse. This loss of vision often precedes awareness of having the disease. We hope that with using AdaptDx optometry can flip this outcome.” – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
