FDA clears Bausch + Lomb multifocal toric contact lens

Bausch + Lomb announced that it received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for Bausch + Lomb Ultra Multifocal for Astigmatism contact lenses.
According to a company press release, the multifocal toric will be available in a fitting set.
“Bausch + Lomb Ultra Multifocal for Astigmatism contact lenses were developed to specifically fulfill a significant unmet need for patients who require astigmatic correction – the second largest segment in contact lenses – and are presbyopic or entering the age of presbyopia,” John Ferris, general manager, U.S. Vision Care, Bausch + Lomb, said in the release. “Up until now, the contact lens options for this group of patients have been limited to custom ordered lenses, monovision, readers or complete contact lens dropout.”
A majority of adults 40 years or older currently wear some type of vision correction, the company said in the release, and one-third of that group is astigmatic. The availability of Bausch + Lomb Ultra Multifocal for Astigmatism contact lenses in a standard fitting set will allow eye care providers to prescribe these lenses during the initial visit.
Bausch + Lomb said these lenses are expected to be available by mid-2019.
