Tangible Science LLC announced that the FDA has cleared a daily disposable silicone hydrogel contact lens coated with a modified formula of Tangible Hydra-PEG.

Tangible Hydra-PEG is a coating applied to custom contact lenses to improve lens wettability and deposit resistance, according to a press release from the company. The recently cleared lens uses a formula variation designed to enhance the surface of daily wear lenses, retain more water and stay cleaner during daily wear than an uncoated lens.

According to the release, the lens material has one of the highest levels of oxygen permeability available in a disposable lens.

“The modified formula for daily disposables is more amenable to high scale manufacturing of disposable lenses, as opposed to low volume custom lenses, and is less expensive to apply,” Tangible Science CEO Vic McCray, MD, told Primary Care Optometry News. “The original Tangible Hydra-PEG formulation is designed to last for the expected 1-year life of custom rigid lenses, while the modified coating’s benefits only need to last for a full day’s wear. The disposable formulation of the coating does not have the ability to be ‘rebuilt.’ The original Tangible Hydra-PEG formulation for custom lenses is designed to be ‘rebuilt’ with a monthly treatment of Tangible Boost (a new product we expect to launch in 2019) to address any wear on the coating over time caused by variations in patients’ tear film and lens care.”

The newly approved contact lens will initially be available in a single vision, aberration-control design, the company said in the release. Future products using the modified Tangible coating will include daily disposable toric and center-distance aspheric designs. – by Joe Gramigna
