Patient outcomes with combined IOL technology using Tecnis lenses demonstrated excellent uncorrected and best-corrected binocular visual acuity at near, intermediate and far distances, according to researcher Sondra Black, OD.

"Personalized vision is all about determining which posterior chamber IOL is going to meet each individual patient’s needs and wants. In this study we enrolled patients who wanted the best quality of vision for all distances, the least amount of night vision symptoms and the ability to read at a closer working distance,” Black told Primary Care Optometry News.

Fifty study patients received a Tecnis Symfony (Abbott Medical Optics) extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL in the dominant eye and a +3.25 D Tecnis Multifocal IOL in the nondominant eye.

Each patient underwent the same routine cataract extraction procedure for each eye, with the second eye scheduled to undergo cataract extraction within 1 to 2 days after the first eye.

At 90 days postoperatively, 32 of the original 50 patients completed the visit and underwent complete evaluations. At this visit, 97% of patients had a binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) of 20/20 or better.

For binocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), 97% of patients were 20/25 or better. For binocular uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA), 94% of patients were 20/25 or better.

Black reported no surgical complications for any of the IOL implantations.

Patients completed a subjective questionnaire on visual symptoms at day 7, day 30 and day 90, after the second eye surgery was completed. Most reported no visual symptoms or mild symptoms when queried about halos, glare, starbursts or blur.

“We were able to meet [the patients’] needs by combining two different Tecnis lenses, the Symfony EDOF lens in their dominant eye and the Tecnis 3.25 add in their nondominant, and essentially personalizing their treatment plan. As you can see by the published data, the visual results were outstanding, and we were able to meet these needs, and [this research] supports that patients may be able to have less dependence on corrective lenses," Black added. – by Abigail Sutton
