Time magazine named Acuvue Oasys with Transitions contact lenses to its “Best Inventions 2018” list.

Each contact lens contains a filter that senses the amount of light entering the eye and darkens or lightens automatically in response. The product was developed through a partnership between Acuvue’s parent company Johnson & Johnson Vision and Transitions Optical.

“We are very proud to see Acuvue Oasys with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology selected by Time magazine as one of the ‘Best Inventions of 2018,’” Chrystel Barranger, president of Transitions Optical, said in a press release from the company. “This innovation will revolutionize contact lenses and photochromics by introducing the benefits of light adaptation to more patients.”

According to the release, the lenses can darken within 45 seconds and revert to clear within 90 seconds when going from outdoors to indoors. The lenses can block up to 70% of visible light and filter light indoors.

“We had to overcome a huge technology hurdle to make this happen,” David Turner, head of contact lens research and development at Johnson & Johnson Vision, said in a press release from J&J.
