LAS VEGAS – Eschenbach Optik of America announced a new partnership with the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, a nonprofit organization that partners blind or visually impaired people with specially trained German shepherd guide dogs.

Representatives from Eschenbach and Fidelco shared the news of this philanthropic effort during a press conference here at Vision Expo West.

“We are making a financial commitment to underwrite the breeding, training and placement of a guide dog,” Eschenbach President and CEO Ken Bradley said at the press conference.

He noted that this effort is in recognition of Eschenbach’s 105th anniversary of global incorporation and 35 years in the North American market.

Fidelco President and CEO Elliot Russman said at the press conference that it takes 2 years, 15,000 hours and $45,000 to train a guide dog from birth.

In partnership with donors, volunteers and staff, the foundation, which raises 150 puppies per year, has placed more than 1,500 German shepherds to clients in 41 states and six Canadian provinces.

The dogs are offered at no cost, with a 10-year commitment to service, Russman said. The foundation provides ongoing training and advice as well as annual follow-up visits.

Kathy, a client of the foundation, attended the press conference with her guide dog, Winnie.

“The white cane made people cross the street to avoid me,” she said. “The dog makes people cross the street to say hello.”

Kathy said she and Winnie are navigating the hotel alone after only one walk-through with hotel security staff. She said she spent 8 days backpacking in the Sierras and has been to Alaska with guide dogs.
