ABB Optical Group appoints Burke as CEO

ABB Optical Group has announced that Thomas E. Burke III as been appointed as the new CEO, while company founder, Angel Alvarez, will continue as a chairman.

“We are thrilled to have Tom as part of the ABB Optical team. He brings the additional talent and leadership needed to harness the dynamic opportunities for growth and innovation that we have in front of us,” Alvarez said in a press release from the company.

“Tom’s expertise and experience in building innovative customer solutions, developing cutting-edge warehouse and logistics networks, and leading dynamic and engaged teams will be an asset to our customers and all of our stakeholders,” Burke continued. “He represents a perfect cultural fit with our core values.”

Burke brings nearly 40 years of experience in health care logistics to his new position, according to the release. His tenure at Cardinal Health began in the 1970s as a warehouse employee. Burke continually advanced leadership roles, eventually serving as the vice president and general manager of the specialty distribution division of Cardinal Health and then, later, as the senior vice president and general manager for the company’s acute pharmaceutical distribution business.

When Cardinal Health acquired Novis Pharmaceuticals in 2007, Burke become the start-up’s CEO and president. According to the release, his most recent role was CEO of Medical Specialties Distributors, a Massachusetts-based supply chain provider offering health care products, biomedical services and technology solutions.

According to the release from ABB Optical, in addition to Alvarez remaining on in a chairman capacity, Brad Weinbrum will continue as president. Alvarez, Burke and Weinbrum will work closely to continue the company’s growth and guide the strategic vision of ABB Optical Group.
