DENVER – Samuel D. Pierce, OD, of Alabama, assumed the presidency of the American Optometric Association here at Optometry’s Meeting.

Pierce has been in private practice in Trussville, Ala., for more than 28 years, according to the AOA’s website. He is past president of the Alabama Optometric Association, served as a member of the SECO Board of Trustees, received the University of Alabama School of Optometry 2010 Alumnus of the Year award and received the Alabama Optometric Association’s Optometrist of the Year award in 2012.

During the AOA’s House of Delegates, Barbara L. Horn, OD, of South Carolina was declared president-elect; William T. Reynolds, OD, of Kentucky was elected vice president; and Robert C. Layman, OD, of Ohio was elected secretary-treasurer.

In addition, James P. DeVleming, OD, of Washington was elected to a 3-year term as trustee; Jacqueline Bowen, OD, of Colorado was elected to a 3-year term; and Lori L. Grover, OD, PhD, of Illinois was elected to a 1-year term.

Christopher J. Quinn, OD, of New Jersey moved into the role of immediate past president, and Fred Farias, OD, of Texas; Steven T. Reed, OD, of Mississippi; and Ronald L. Benner, OD, of Montana, continue serving as trustees. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
