DENVER – The Vision Impact Institute is finalizing a study on commercial driver safety in India, global executive director, Kristan Gross, told Primary Care Optometry News here at Optometry’s Meeting.
Commercial drivers in India are required to renew a certificate of fitness every 2 years, but vision is not included, she said. Preliminary study results show that 31% of drivers in Delhi have distance vision problems, 40% have color and depth issues, and 31% have near vision problems.
“There will be 25 million large commercial drivers by 2020 in India,” Gross said, “and half have vision issues.”
Gross said that the VII, an independent global entity funded by a grant from Essilor, has hired or is in the process of hiring program managers for India, Africa-Europe, the Americas and China. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
