DENVER – Visioneering Technologies announced that its NaturalVue Multifocal 1 Day contact lenses are now available in plus powers.

The multifocal lenses, made of etafilcon A, are also available in 0.25-D steps, “which represents the most extensive power range of any disposable soft multifocal contact lens currently on the market,” according to Doug Benoit, OD, FAAO, Visioneering Technologies executive director of professional affairs, at a company-sponsored press conference here at Optometry’s Meeting.

The expansion brings the full power range of the lens from +4.00 D to -12.25 D.

“Our patients commented on how easily they handled the lenses. They reported good comfort in morning wear and end-of-day wear,” Benoit said.

“This lens meets all of my criteria for patient safety, comfort and wearability,” he continued.

He said as an optometrist he is interested in companies that partner with him and offer an enhanced product with a dual modality, like NaturalVue multifocal lenses.

By expanding the plus powers, optometrists now have more options for a wider array of patients, Brett O’Connor, OD, a clinical researcher and optometrist based in Jacksonville, Fla., said at the press conference. In addition, the lenses do not have a specialized fitting process for extended depth-of-focus.

He spoke of a satisfied patient at his office who is 68 years old with moderate cataracts and 1 D of astigmatism.

“He is not a textbook good fit for contact lenses,” O’Connor said, but he is wearing this lens proudly and with relief.

The edge design of the lens has been tweaked to get more comfort and better movement, O’Connor added. Further, the company added hyaluronic acid to the lens material.

“I really think that adding hyaluronic acid immediately improved how happy patients are with the lens. These wetting agents make a big difference,” O’Connor said. – by Abigail Sutton
