DigitalOptometrics announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent that covers its telehealth optometry system for remote comprehensive eye examinations.

In this telehealth system, a licensed optometrist connects with patients in real time via video conferencing technology and remotely operated ophthalmic equipment, offering a thorough exam that takes less than 30 minutes, according to the company in a press release.

A digital phoropter is used to provide visual findings related to a patient’s need for contacts and eye glasses. At the end of the visit, the optometrist can offer a patient a prescription.

“Our method, apparatus and system offer customers long-term market exclusivity and a solution to the problem of securing a licensed optometrist to perform on-site eye exams at a customer location,” Howard S. Fried, OD, president and founder of DigitalOptometrics, said in the release. “With our patented system, licensed optometrists perform eye exams remotely at multiple locations, offering patients accessible needed eye care and a comprehensive eye exam without the physical presence of an optometrist during all customer business hours, enabling the growth and expansion of the customer business.”
