Maryland governor signs bill to protect kids from digital screens

On April 24 Gov. Larry Hogan signed HB 1110, which mandates preventive measures to protect children from myopia, dry eye disease and other conditions that may be associated with excessive digital screen use.
“Public Schools – Health and Safety Best Practices – Digital Devices,” which was unanimously approved by the Maryland House and Senate, requires the State Department of Education, in consultation with the Maryland Department of Health, to develop health and safety best practices for the use of digital devices in school classrooms by June 1, 2019. It also requires the department to provide the best practices to each county board and nonpublic school for consideration and adoption.
“The state's medical experts will help the department of education develop a uniform set of recommendations to share with local districts, many of which lack the resources to do this themselves, to protect their own students,” according to an announcement from Screens and Kids, an advocacy group for classroom screen safety based in Maryland.
The bill was sponsored by Delegate Steven Arentz (R-District 36), who is deputy minority whip.
