Daily disposable contact lenses are contributing greatly to the growth of the eye care industry, news that was highlighted at ABB Optical Group’s national sales meeting in Orlando.

First quarter 2018 data from ABB Optical Group shows that daily disposables have experienced a dollar growth of 15% year-to-date, thus helping eye care practitioners who partner with the company grow their contact lens sales 33% more quickly than the rest of the market on average, according to a press release from ABB.

The company’s 3-day conference also featured other prominent areas of growth opportunities for eye care practitioners, one being the introduction of a catalog of new specialty lenses, with the focus placed on gas-permeable lenses.

Another strategy that shows potential for market growth is direct-to-patient shipping, according to the release. ABB Optical’s data suggests that patients are seven times less likely to return contact lenses when products are shipped directly to their homes or places of employment. Furthermore, eye care practices with greater than 45% direct-to-patient shipping dollar share increased 8.6% year-over-year, with the national average being 7.2%.

Finally, the conference emphasized that practices can become more efficient by consolidating orders to one optical lab.

“Optometry is growing today thanks to a range of factors, including technological advances, increased medical spending and better educated patients who understand the importance of vision care,” ABB founder and CEO Angel Alvarez, said in the release. “With great confidence in the future of optometry, we are investing in our products and services to truly partner with our customers on economic growth and success.”
