NEPTUNE, N.J. – Brian Hall, OD, prioritized oral antibiotics used in the systemic management of ocular disorders here at the New Jersey Academy of Optometry continuing education meeting. Penicillins are the most commonly prescribed and are, “very effective for infections around the ocular adnexa and ocular tissue,” Hall said.
If allergies exist, other choices include the cephalosporins, Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, Sun) and the fluoroquinolones, he added.
