The New England College of Optometry Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, Dipl, as the college’s new president and CEO.

Purcell will replace Clifford Scott, OD, MPH, and will begin his new role on July 2.

The appointment comes after a competitive national search, according to a press release from the college.

Purcell is a graduate of NECO’s 1984 class. He began his career in a private practice with his father. For the past 10 years, Purcell has served as senior vice president of customer development for Essilor of America.

“I am confident my experiences in private practice, academia and industry will bring a unique perspective to the college,” Purcell said in the release. “NECO is poised to lead optometric education into the next decade and beyond. I am committed to working closely with the community to create and achieve the goals and objectives necessary to get us where we need to be as a college and a profession.”

As president and CEO of NECO, Purcell will supervise advancements in educational, clinical, research and service missions.
