Alcon announced the launch of Systane Complete, a new formula designed as a first-line treatment for evaporative, aqueous-deficient and mixed dry eye.

“... it takes key ingredients from our existing drops and elevates the technology to deliver real relief for patients for all major types of dry eye,” Alcon’s director of professional relations and practitioner partnerships, U.S. Vision Care, JeanMarie Davis, OD, FAAO, said in a company press release.

“Systane Complete uses intelligent moisture and lipid technology to enhance delivery of the active ingredient, propylene glycol, across the surface of the eye and stabilize the tear film,” Davis told Primary Care Optometry News. “Its advanced nano-droplet technology allows for fast-acting hydration, tear evaporation protection and long-lasting relief.”

She said the nano-droplet technology enabled the key attributes from Systane Ultra and Balance to be brought together to create a formula that addresses the two leading causes of dry eye.

Systane Complete is intended, “to simplify a doctor’s recommendation for dry eye treatment rather than make it more complicated,” Davis told PCON. “Our hope is that the existing Systane brands will continue to be the go-to recommendation for doctors for patients with specific types of dry eye – Systane Ultra primarily for aqueous tear-deficient dry eye and Systane Balance mainly for evaporative dry eye. Systane Complete will be an option for doctors to recommend for patients to address both major types of dry eye.”

Alcon said in the press release that Systane Complete is currently available in select retail locations and e-commerce sites and will be available in optometrists’ and ophthalmologists’ offices by May. Broad over-the-counter availability is anticipated by June. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
