The FTC workshop, “The Contact Lens Rule and the evolving contact lens marketplace,” is taking place today in Washington, with supporters from the Health Care Alliance for Patient Safety, representing all 50 U.S. states, in attendance.

Members of the alliance are increasingly concerned that eye health and vision care are not priorities in the national health care discussion, according to a press release from group.

The current verification of contact lens prescriptions through robocalls, excessive-quantity sales and lens substitutions has a sufficient disregard for patient safety, according to Deanna Alexander, OD, alliance chair, in the release.

The following Health Care Alliance for Patient Safety members and advocates will speak on panels at the workshop:

  • Carol Lakkis, BScOptom, PhD, participant on panel II: Contact lens health and safety issues. Lakkis is clinical research fellow and head of applied clinical science for Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc.
  • David A. Cockrell, OD, participant on panel IV: Examining the verification process and panel V: Prescription release and consumer choice. Cockrell is a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry and past president of the American Optometric Association.
  • Shaun Schooley, participant on panel IV: Examining the verification process. Schooley is the vice president of global marketing technology for CooperVision.
