WCO: World governments must redouble commitment to eye care

Despite current efforts in eye care and vision health, as the world population increases and ages it could potentially lead to a threefold increase in blindness by 2050, according to a press release from the World Council of Optometry.
Prevalence data states that the progress between 1990 and 2015 resulted in about 90 million people being treated or prevented from becoming blind or seriously visually impaired.
However, with the increase in myopia and diabetic retinopathy, these numbers will overshadow this progress, according to the release.
Various governments need to redouble their commitment to eye care and make eye health accessible for all, to stave off the unfortunate predictions, they said.
The WCO said it supports the Our Children’s Vision Campaign.
