North Carolina to study laser use by ODs

The North Carolina House voted to allow the North Carolina Institute of Medicine to study enhanced access to eye care and report to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services by Oct. 1, 2018.
As a result of the 109-6 vote, the NC IOM will study the issues addressed in House Bill 36, Enact Enhanced Access to Eye Care Act.
The Enact Enhanced Access to Eye Care Act, which would amend optometric scope of practice to allow for certain laser and surgical procedures in North Carolina, was filed Feb. 2, 2017, by House Rep. Justin Burr.
The bill would expand access to offer in-office procedures that do not require general anesthesia.
The four procedures of focus include: YAG capsulotomy, laser peripheral iridotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and removal and identification of skin lesions around the eye, according to the North Carolina Optometric Society.
