Nearly 3 million people 40 years and older are affected by glaucoma, according to a report from Prevent Blindness.

The report from the group, “Future of vision: Forecasting the prevalence and costs of vision problems,” states that the percentage is expected to increase by almost 50%, to 4.3 million, by 2032 and by more than 90%, to 5.5 million, by 2050, due to the large aging U.S. population.

Because early detection and treatment are critical, Prevent Blindness and other organizations have declared January National Glaucoma Awareness Month in an effort to better educate the public.
