ANAHEIM, Calif. – Art Optical announced a new scleral lens design, Ampleye, at an academy-sponsored press conference here at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting.

Michael A. Johnson, FCLSA, Art Optical’s director of consultation services, reported that Ampleye is a “16.5-mm scleral lens that fully vaults the cornea and the limbus, features a toric haptic periphery and should land on the bulbar conjunctiva.

“We can do 16 mm and 17 mm diameters as well,” he noted.

This lens is ideal for patients with irregular corneas, lens stability issues and corneal gas-permeable lens intolerance as well as those with ocular surface disease, the company stated in a press release.

Johnson explained that the four-zone lens design starts with the central vault zone, then the peripheral cornea, then the lift zone, then the scleral landing zone.

“The fully adjustable four-zone design gives the practitioner total control of the lens,” he said.

Johnson noted that Art Optical’s lens selection guide recommends the initial lens based on the corneal condition and that a standard nine-lens diagnostic fitting set is appropriate for most.

Ampleye lenses are made in Optimum materials by Contamac, according to the release. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
