Researchers found that hyaluronic acid-trehalose is safe and offers greater patient satisfaction than existing HA-only eye drops, particularly for the first month of treatment, in patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease.

The phase 3, multicenter study included 105 adults with moderate to severe dry eye disease receiving either HA-trehalose or HA three to six times per day for 84 days,

Researchers utilized a questionnaire on dry eye and symptoms, Schirmer’s test, tear break-up time, conjunctival hyperemia and global performance for assessment at baseline, day 35 and day 84.

The Ocular Surface Disease Index was reduced from baseline in both groups at days 35 and 84, with a greater effect in the HA-trehalose group.

For ocular symptoms upon instillation, both the incidence and the severity were lower for HA-trehalose than for HA.

The results for HA-trehalose were favorable in stinging, itching and blurred vision, as well.

“...HA-trehalose could be considered a therapeutic advancement in the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye syndrome, particularly in the first month of treatment, improving patients’ quality of life and promoting longer term treatment compliance,” the researchers wrote. –Abigail Sutton
