AOA advocates, educates at state legislative national conference
More than 230 doctors of optometry and state leadership met in Denver in October, advocating for the American Optometric Association and working together to respond to new challenges and opportunities facing the field.
The conference addressed the new market conditions for optometrists created by the Affordable Care Act, in addition to new challenges posed from insurers, organized medicine, emergent technology, new legislation and online retailers, according to an AOA press release.
“This conference offers tools that you can take back to your states and your membership, so that you can advocate for your scope of practice or parity,” Deanna Alexander, OD, said in the release.
Breakout sessions were led by AOA State Government Relations Committee and Third Party Center members.
One session in particular highlighted the successes of Texas and Kansas in passing state legislation that curbs anticompetitive vision care plan practices, according to the release.
Another session highlighted emergent online vision tests.
Tom Daly, Esq., gave an update on nondiscrimination law and the proposed Dental and Optometric Care Access Act (DOC Access Act), HR 3323.
