Heidelberg expands field of view for Spectralis

NEW ORLEANS – The Heidelberg Spectralis now provides a 55-degree field of view for multicolor, BluePeak, infrared reflectance, angiography and optical coherence tomography with its expanded Widefield Imaging Module, a company representative reported here at an American Academy of Optometry-sponsored press conference.

Steve Thomas, national imaging specialist for the company, told attendees, “A characteristic of the Spectralis is the multimodal approach to imaging and having a variety of wavelengths that can image the retina in different ways.”

Thomas said that typical imaging was 6 mm or 9 mm, but “now we’ve expanded to 16.5 mm wide to capture details that extend beyond the posterior pole. New wide scans can be generated with typical raster line and radial scan patterns. We correlate these wide scan patterns with scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) imaging as well.

“TruTrack active eye tracking provides pristine image quality,” he continued. “You can appreciate the full extent of large lesions.”

He said the module also correlates the OCT images with high-resolution confocal SLO images.

“One of the other capabilities of Spectralis is multicolor imaging,” Thomas said. “There are three individual and discrete wavelengths that can be displayed to reveal different layers of the retina individually. Images can be viewed individually or combined for multicolor. We are expanding multicolor ability to the widefield module as well. They are expanded from 30 degrees to 55 degrees.
