NEW ORLEANS – Brien Holden Vision Pty. Ltd. announced the BHV Omni, the company’s line of daily disposable lenses for presbyopia.

Paul Erickson, OD, PHD, FAAO, CEO of BHVI, said here at an American Academy of Optometry-sponsored press conference that the company has developed proprietary technology for achieving extended focus by incorporating multiple higher-order aberrations into the optical design to enhance image quality over a range of distances.

“These aberrations neutralize the effects of defocus and result in extended depth of focus (EDOF),” he said.

Erickson noted that with EDOF, the depth of focus range is greater than that achieved by standard lenses.

“The product we’ve defined has three EDOF levels, one for emerging presbyopes, one for intermediate and one for advanced presbyopes,” he said. “In addition to providing this EDOF, the lens reduces ghosting and halos and reduces sensitivity to variation in pupil size, internal eye aberrations and contact lens centration.”

The lens is made of etafilcon A. It is approved for distance power -20 D to +20 D, and manufacturing is validated for -9 D to +6 D, Erickson told Primary Care Optometry News.

"There are three EDOF designs: EDOF 075, EDOF 150 and EDOF 225," he told PCON. "These are analogous to near add powers of 0.75 D, 1.50 D and 2.25 D, respectively."

The BHV Omni received FDA approval in April, and the company has not yet announced plans for commercialization. This is the first product from the Brien Holden Vision Institute to be brought to market by its own company, according to BHV in a press release. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
