Brien A. Holden, PhD, DSc, OAM, a professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at Australia’s University of New South Wales, CEO of the Brien Holden Vision Institute, humanitarian and scientist, has died in Sydney, according to a press release issued by the institute.

"Today is a very sad day in the history of our organization," Kovin Naidoo, BSc, BOptom, MPH, OD, PhD, FAAO, FBCO, deputy CEO of the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI), said in the release. "Brien was a man of extraordinary vision who devoted himself to the service of mankind.

“He demanded that the research be indivisible from the service to society,” Naidoo continued. “He was truly an intellectual giant in eye health and vision, a powerhouse driving change by mobilizing teams globally united in science and service to the disadvantaged of our world."
