NEW YORK – Following the successful launch of the Clariti 1 day family of lenses, CooperVision prepares to introduce another lens in this category to practitioners in May.

CooperVision said it will roll out MyDay, a silicone hydrogel daily disposable currently available in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, to select U.S. practices in May, with expanded availability through 2015 and into 2016. Gary Orsborn, OD, MS, FAAO, FBCLA, in an interview with Primary Care Optometry News here at Vision Expo East, referred to this lens material as “smart silicone chemistry.”

The material for this daily disposable uses the least amount of raw silicon to create highly efficient molecular channels, delivering high oxygen permeability and a low modulus (or lens stiffness), explained Orsborn, vice president of global professional and clinical affairs for CooperVision.

He said that Clariti 1 day, a family of sphere, toric and multifocal daily disposable silicone hydrogels introduced last fall, has “exceeded expectations.”

The company has seen the new fit daily disposable category grow 38% from the fourth quarter of 2013 to the fourth quarter of 2014, according to Orsborn.

He also discussed expansion of the Biofinity line of lenses. CooperVision launched an extended range last year, the Biofinity XR, available in +15 D to -20 D.

“The next entry will be Biofinity XR toric,” Orsborn said, “available in +20 D to -20 D in 0.50-D increments and -0.75 D to -5.75 D cylinder in 0.50-D steps, with 5-degree increments around the clock.

“It will be fully cast-molded, not lathed, as is done with custom lenses typically,” he added.

“After this is introduced, then comes Biofinity XR multifocal, then Biofinity XR multifocal toric,” Orsborn said.

“Many patients need a special type of high-end lens,” he said, “and that offers opportunity for practice growth and profitability. We’ve heard stories from practitioners about how they’ve changed people’s lives by fitting them in Biofinity XR.” – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
