ATLANTA – Alcon announced here at SECO that its ClearCare hydrogen peroxide solution will now come packaged with a new-and-improved lens case design, and that ClearCare Plus with HydraGlyde will be launched later this year.

According to Alcon vice president of professional affairs, Rick Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, at an Alcon-sponsored press conference, one of the case’s contact lens baskets has been made blue so the patient not wearing his or her vision correction can easily distinguish between the right and left lenses. The lens baskets also now have tabs to make opening easier.

Weisbarth also reported that ClearCare Plus with HydraGlyde will launch in the second half of 2015. He said the new solution, which the FDA approved in January, contains the same moisture ingredient found in Opti-Free PureMoist.

“Contact lens wear peaks in the late 20s and early 30s, then declines,” Weisbarth said. “The need for refractive correction grows with time, yet contact lens wear decreases. We know that the majority of dropouts occur as a result of comfort. We feel ClearCare has a big role to play.

“Compliance is a major problem,” he continued. Forty-two percent of patients who use multipurpose solutions top it off. The CDC says that’s the leading behavior contributing to microbial keratitis (MK). Nearly a million clinic visits occur per year due to MK.

“ClearCare [hydrogen peroxide solution] can be a problem solver, but doctors need to position it as a problem preventer,” Weisbarth concluded.

Marked packages with the new cases are expected to be on store shelves for most major retailers this month, according to the release, while the new solution will be launched later this year.

The company announced in another press release that Air Optix Colors are now available in plus powers.

Air Optix Colors, monthly replacement, daily wear color contacts, were launched in the U.S. in June 2014 with nine colors on a silicone hydrogel platform, according to the release. The lenses are available with an 8.6-mm base curve and a 14.2-mm diameter. The power range now includes plano along with +6.00 D to -6.00 D (in 0.25-D steps) and -6.50 D to -8.00 D (0.50-D steps). – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
