ATLANTA – Bausch + Lomb announced here at SECO that its Biotrue OneDay for Presbyopia is available in an expanded low add power range

The nesofilcon A lens was initially available in June 2014 in low add powers between +3.00 D and -6.00 D in 0.25 D steps, according to a company press release. Now it is available from +6.00 D to -9.00 D in 0.25 D steps.

A company representative told Primary Care Optometry News that the company has plans to expand into the high range in the future. The new low add powers are in limited distribution now and will expand in the third quarter.

According to the press release distributed at SECO, the Biotrue OneDay for Presbyopia lenses combine the HyperGel material used in Biotrue OneDay contact lenses with the company’s 3-Zone Progressive optical design used in PureVision2 multifocal contact lenses for presbyopia.

Regarding the similar design in the two lenses, Bausch + Lomb’s Benjamin Chudner, OD, FAAO, told PCON, “We feel we’ve cracked the code,” on fitting multifocals.

“Historically, it takes 2.6 attempts to fit a multifocal, and three out of 10 are never successful,” he said.

“The biggest obstacle to success is not following the fitting guide,” he added.

The company is launching a new fitting app to help practitioners with this challenge. Chudner said the app is in beta testing and will launch in 2 weeks. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
