The Vision Council reported that results from a study evaluating Internet utilization for eye wear purchases showed that U.S. patients were most likely to access this route for buying contact lenses as compared to other eye wear modalities.
The data was compiled from the Vision Council 2014 Internet Influence Report, which is part of the VisionWatch research program, according to the study.
As detailed in the study, 28.4% of consumers used the Internet when purchasing contact lenses, compared to 19.5% of plano sunglasses, 19.1% of prescription glasses and 8.0% of over-the-counter readers purchases.
The Vision Council noted in its report: “Despite a relatively high number of consumers using the Internet to some extent when shopping for general retail goods, the practice is still not as prevalent when consumers are shopping for eye wear.”
Most Americans used the Internet to conduct online window shopping, with many comparing prices as well as examining possible brands and retail locations, according to the study.
The study also reported that 24% of people who had used the Internet during their purchase of eye wear actually purchased their eye wear via the Internet.
Additionally, 27.0% of participants that had recently purchased eye wear and had Internet access reported that they would possibly or probably use the Internet to purchase eye wear directly in the future; 37.3% reported that they would not use the Internet in any capacity for future purchases.
